Last night seven aircrafts of the Turkish Air Force entered the airspace of Greece, the Athens News Agency reports. The Greek operational aircraft was launched into the air to intercept them. According to the agency, four Turkish aircraft violated the border northward of the island of Chios, the other three – eastward of the island of Rhodes. It is estimated that the Turkish airforce took part in naval exercises.
Greece routinely accuses Turkey of violating air and, occasionally, maritime space. The two countries have differences on delimitation of the Aegean maritime areas: Athens recognizes the problem of demarcating the shelf, and Turkey periodically challenges the determination of the sea and air borders.
At the same time, the two countries are negotiating on measures of mutual trust. Greece supports the accession of Turkey to the EU, but subject to all the conditions, including the full normalization of relations with Athens.
