Serdukov: Command and Control Architecture to Be Modified

15.10.2008 10:34

Russian Defense Minister Anatoli Serdukov claimed that in the nearest future the command and control architecture in the Russian Armed Forces will be radically modified.

According to the Defense Minister, it was decided to abandon the accustomed vertical “Military Command- Army – Division – Regiment”. Instead “we will have only Military Commands, Operational Command and Brigades”, Serdukov said.

"It is done to improve command and control of the troops”, the Minister pointed out.

Besides, it is planned to cut about 400 General positions in the Russian Armed Forces by 2012.

According to the Minister, the number of Generals will be reduced from 1100 down to 900. Simultaneously the staff of the Defense Ministry will be reduced almost two-fold, i.e. down to 8.500 men. In turn the strength of junior commissioned officers in the Russian Armed Forces will be increased approximately to 60,000. Finally, by 2012, the strength of the Russian Armed Forces will be one million including 150,000 commissioned officers.
